The Department of Science and Technology (DoST) has introduced an P11.3-million technology business incubator (TBI) in Davao City and the surrounding region. The aim of the TBI is to foster the growth of the healthcare technology startup ecosystem in the area.

The collaboration between DoST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) and the University of the Immaculate Conception has resulted in the launch of the Mobilizing Advanced Research and Innovations to Advocate Nation-Building (MARIAN) TBI. This initiative seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and the health tech industry.

The introduction of the TBI aligns with DoST-PCIEERD’s vision of advancing technology and entrepreneurship to contribute to the growth and development of the nation. It provides a platform for students, faculty, and researchers to transform their research and development outputs into impactful startups, particularly in the healthcare sector.

By creating an environment where innovative business ideas and research converge, the MARIAN TBI aims to address pressing societal issues through the development of cutting-edge ICT tools, including mobile and web applications.

Health tech has emerged as the third most prominent sector among startups in Southeast Asia, with fintech and e-commerce taking the lead. However, health tech startup deals have slowed down in recent months. Despite this, Davao City has shown promise in the startup scene and has made progress in the Global Startup Ecosystem Index.

To boost awareness and participation in the local startup ecosystem of Davao, the DoST-PCIEERD plans to conduct trainings and workshops with regional partners and mentors through the TBI program. The MARIAN TBI is one of the 44 TBIs supported by DoST-PCIEERD and has been funded through its Higher Education Institution Readiness for Innovation and Technopreneurship program.

Overall, the launch of the technology business incubator in Davao City is expected to provide significant support and opportunities for healthcare technology startups in the region.
