The 83-year-old Queen will abdicate in just two weeks, on January 14, exactly 52 years to the day she became queen.

Her son Frederick’s title would be promoted from Crown Prince Frederick to Frederick X. The decision has been described as “unexpected” and will come as a shock to the nation. Many believe that she will remain on the throne until her death.

In July, the queen became the longest-sitting queen in Danish history.

But the Queen explained that her ill health was one of the reasons for her abandoning her responsibilities. The king underwent extensive back surgery in February this year.

The operation prevented her from attending King Charles’ coronation, and her son and his wife took her place.

The Queen said in her New Year’s Eve speech: “The surgery naturally led to thinking about the future, and whether the time had come to leave responsibility to the next generation.”

“I have decided that now is the right time. On January 14, 2024 – 52 years after succeeding my beloved father – I will step down as Queen of Denmark.”
