City police say people in Alberta and British Columbia were duped out of their money by an individual pretending to be a tech salesman who was offering discounted televisions. Calgary police said they received reports of the 36-year-old male in 2020 after several people had given him money, expecting to receive discounted items including televisions, in return.

The victims of the fraud were led to believe the man worked for a tech company and had access to electronics at prices lower than the retail cost. Police laid several charges at the time.

The next year, Calgary police received further complaints about the same man after people in B.C. reportedly gave him money, expecting a similar exchange of high-end electronics.

It’s believed the man used the proceeds from those fraudulent sales to go on extravagant dates with women, who along with their friends were also promised electronics at discount prices. None of the items were ever delivered to those who paid for them.

Last December, Bryan Christopher Syryda was convicted of fraud and given a condition sentence that included house arrest, say city police.

Police determined the accused (then) violated the conditions of their house arrest by defrauding a local business,” city police said Tuesday in a press release.

“Investigators learned that the accused registered a business to legitimize his activity and was posing as a corporate merchandise supplier.”

Just weeks after his previous conviction and up until March, police say Syryda visited a Calgary tattoo business five times to receive touch-ups on his tattoos.

During those visits, he told the owner of the tattoo business he owned a company called Brand Culture YYC and insisted he could provide them with merchandise they could sell, said police.

The tattoo business agreed to purchase nearly $11,000 worth of merchandise from the accused, but the merchandise was never delivered. The owner of the tattoo business then reported the incident to police,” say police.

After an investigation of those transactions, Syryda, 37, was arrested Monday at his home in the 7100 block of Fountain Road. S.E. and charged with one count of fraud over $5,000, one count of possession of proceeds of crime over $5,000, and two counts of breaching a court order.

His next appearance in court is scheduled for Thursday.
