Company news: Upstate hires Dr. Marek Polomsky

Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Marek Polomsky has joined Upstate University Hospital as an assistant professor in the division of cardiac surgery. He will also serve as the medical director of cardiac surgery critical care.

Dr. Polomsky comes to Upstate from the University of Vermont Medical Center where he served as a cardiothoracic surgeon and assistant professor in the department of surgery. At UVMMC, he also served as the quality chair for cardiothoracic surgery and the surgical director of the mechanical circulatory support program.

His clinical interests include valve repair and replacement, thoracic aortic aneurysm surgery, coronary artery bypass grafting including off-pump (beating heart) coronary artery bypass surgery and multi-arterial revascularization, minimally invasive cardiac surgery, transcatheter valve surgery, arrhythmia surgery, as well as advanced heart failure surgery including mechanical circulatory support.

He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery.

He is board certified in surgery and cardiothoracic surgery.

Polomsky has published numerous articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and presented his work at national meetings, most recently “Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Infective Endocarditis and Valve-Related Surgery: Analysis of a National Clinical Database” at the 2023 American Association for Thoracic Surgery meeting. He has a strong interest in quality and outcomes research, as well as surgical performance education.

Additionally, he has served as principal or sub-investigator on multiple national clinical trials, investigating transcatheter valve replacement technology, as well as conditions such as post-operative atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass grafting surgery.

Polomsky earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry, where he also conducted a research fellowship in thoracic/foregut surgery. He completed his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Emory University School of Medicine.
