Denmark, Netherlands join the JET pact, and add over R6bn

The Netherlands and Denmark have joined the International Partners Group supporting the just energy transition in South Africa, with an additional pledge of over R6 billion (based on exchange rates on 20 October 2023).

Following its meeting on Wednesday, Cabinet, in a statement, said it welcomed the two countries as members of the partnership that was initially forged in 2021 at the UN’s climate summit COP26, in Glasgow, UK. The original partners – UK, US, France, Germany and the EU – pledged an initial $8.5 billion to assist South Africa in decarbonising its economy in order to meet climate commitments. The pledge was heavily balanced towards loans with President Cyril Ramaphosa calling for grant contributions to be ramped up.
