Clement not expecting ‘a lot of’ January business – BBC Sport

Rangers manager Philippe Clement does not expect to do a lot of business in the January transfer window but does think he will be able to reshape his squad a little.

Clement believes the summer is a better time to make bigger changes.

“Reshaping it in January is much more difficult than reshaping it in the summer,” the Belgian said.

“The idea is to do some things, but it will not be a lot of things. It just needs to be the right things.”

Clement, whose side sit second in the Scottish Premiership as they prepare to visit Heart of Midlothian on Wednesday, reckons January will be an important month regardless of comings and goings at Ibrox now a new director of football recruitment – Nils Koppen – has been appointed.

The Rangers manager revealed there will be individual talks with all the players, as well as key sessions to build for the future, during the club’s training camp in Spain.

“I’m getting to know my players better and better and that’s really important,” Clement said.

He gave Todd Cantwell as an example, the English midfielder having been hauled off after only 36 minutes of the midweek Europa League draw with Aris Limassol before creating both goals in Sunday’s domestic win over St Mirren.

“We had really good talks this week and I’ve got to know him better, as I have with other players,” Clement added.

“That’s going to be a very important thing when we go to our training camp, where I always take the time to have individual talks with all the players.

“So it’s going to be hard work in training and then, in the evening, lots of talks with the staff together with the players and with the players individually to really get to know them.”

Speaking before Rangers’ annual meeting, Clement insisted that his long-term ambitions were not all about winning trophies.

“I love to do things with people together, to give people pleasure, to give people fun,” he said.

“I love this job when we win games and I see afterwards people being happy in the stands – players being happy and players who evolve, become better, get transfers to better teams, being proud about that, getting the best out of them.

“But, don’t get me wrong, I want to win a lot of trophies. If I do something, I want to win.”
