t’s Clean Air Day tomorrow (June 15), a campaign delivered across the UK to build awareness of the impact of air pollution on our health, and easy ways to tackle it in order to protect our health and environment.
According to the Global Action Plan, air pollution is the cause of 36,000 deaths in the UK.
The company’s website offers various resouces for individuals, schools, and businesses.
In order to celebrate the day, electric car-lease company Drive Electric researched the UK areas with the greenest residents.
Drive Electric’s research also looked at the most public green spaces, the most eco-friendly automobiles, and the lowest energy-consumption rates.
Here are the results.
UK’s most eco-friendly areas
Richmond Upon Thames, London
Richmond Upon Thames, which received an overall rating of 8.46, is recognised as having the greenest area. Within the municipality, there are 930 licensed electric vehicles for every 100,000 residents, 228 charging stations, and an average of 6.43 public green spaces within a 1,000-metre radius.
Hammersmith and Fulham, London
Another London borough, Hammersmith and Fulham, comes in second place, with a score of 8.19 overall. In the borough, there are 1,905 licensed electric cars for every 100,000 residents, 340 charging stations, and 5.66 public green areas on average every 1,000 metres.
Additionally, Hammersmith and Fulham has 3.3 tonnes of CO2 emissions per person, 24,381 licensed ICE vehicles per 100,000 residents, and an energy consumption of 870.8 GWh.
Camden, London
Camden, a borough of London, came in third, with an overall ranking of 8.06. Within the area, there are 172 charging stations, 9.65 public green areas on average, and 1,031 licensed electric vehicles per 100,000 residents.
Camden also has 3.3 tonnes of CO2 emissions per person, 18,873 licensed ICE vehicles per 100,000 residents, and a 1,477.7 GWh energy consumption rate.
UK’s least eco-friendly areas
Neath Port Talbot, Wales
With a mere 1.64 overall, the Welsh county borough of Neath Port Talbot tops the list. Within the borough, there are only 257 licensed electric vehicles for every 100,000 residents, 13 charging stations, and an average of 3.03 public green areas per 1,000 metres.
In addition, Neath Port Talbot has 1,385.7 GWh of energy consumption, 47.9 tonnes of CO2 emissions per person, and 49,648 licensed ICE vehicles per 100,000 residents.
Fenland, Cambridgeshire
The next district is Fenland, which is located in Cambridgeshire and has a mere 2.08 overall. In the district, there are only 316 licensed electric vehicles for every 100,000 residents, six charging stations, and an average of 2.8 public open spaces within a 1,000 metre radius.
In addition, Fenland has an energy usage of 510.1 GWh, 16.7 tonnes of CO2 emissions per person, and 55,108 licensed ICE vehicles per 100,000 inhabitants.
North Lincolnshire
North Lincolnshire, with a mere 2.14 overall, comes in third. In the vicinity, there are only 325 licensed electric vehicles for every 100,000 residents, 28 charging stations, and an average of 3.2 public open spaces within a 1,000 metre radius.
In addition, North Lincolnshire has 1,243.1 GWh of energy consumption, 41.4 tonnes of CO2 emissions per person, 52,802 licensed ICE vehicles per 100,000 residents, and 52,802 licensed ICE vehicles overall.
The research also led to the discovery that at 3,764.4 GWh, Birmingham has the greatest energy usage per area in the UK. The Orkney Islands have the UK’s lowest energy use, with 138.5 GWh.
Hackney’s CO2 emissions are the lowest in the UK and the Tower Hamlets is the area with the most public green spaces, with the London borough home to 12 parks, playing fields, or public gardens within a 1,000-metre radius.
