Vehicle cover
Your motorhome may need to be insured to the minimum levels required of any motor vehicle being driven on the public highway.
That may be third party liability cover but if you do opt for the minimum, you should be aware that this may typically not cover you for situations where your motorhome is damaged, destroyed or stolen etc. It only covers the costs associated with an injury or damage sustained by a third party.
It may be possible to extend the minimum cover to include the risks of fire and theft.
Asset cover
Classic motorhome insurance is perhaps typically associated with fully comprehensive cover, which may include protection against the costs arising should your motorhome be damaged in an accident or indeed completely written-off.
Given the typical values associated with the average motorhome, in many cases it may be highly advisable to think carefully before deciding to opt for the typically lesser cover that comes with third party or third party, fire and theft protection.
Contents cover
Unlike a typical motor vehicle, your motorhome may be furnished and with very possibly expensive movables, fixtures and fittings.
Some camper van insurnace policies may be able to cover such items against the risks that may arise from things such as burglary and vandalism etc.
Usage and inconvenience cover
Some policies may recognise that if your motorhome is stolen or seriously damaged while you are away on holiday then you may also have lost your holiday accommodation. As a result, they may offer contributions towards the costs of emergency holiday accommodation and so on.
Variations
Although the above categories may be commonly found on what may be described as classic motorhome insurance, there may also be significant differences of interpretation and degrees of cover between policies. It is typically advisable to read your caravan insurance policy carefully to be sure that you understand what is and is not provided.
