In reaction to homeowners receiving letters from Service Line Warranties of Canada, the City of Greater Sudbury has clarified the nature of their partnership with the company
The City of Greater Sudbury has endorsed Service Line Warranties of Canada’s services, but receive no compensation for the program and no public funds have been expended.
“Service Line Warranties of Canada is solely responsible for the management and servicing of these plans,” the city noted in a media release issued today.
The media release was issued in response to homeowners receiving letters from Service Line Warranties of Canada as part of the first phase of the company’s city-wide mailout.
At the top of the letter are logos for both the company and City of Greater Sudbury.
The letters reportedly provide information on the company’s optional and voluntary service line warranty program, which offers coverage plans to help homeowners cover repair costs associated with the private portions of their water and sewer/septic lines.
In their media release, the city clarifies that they maintain sanitary sewer and water service lines between the main system and the property line, while homeowners are responsible for the pipes on their property.
“A break, clog or leak can result in the loss of water supply to the home, sewer backups and potential property damage,” they note. “Repairs to these lines can be costly and may not be covered by basic homeowners’ insurance.”
Service Line Warranties of Canada is an independent with an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and provides optional service line repair coverage plans to homeowners in more than 70 municipalities across Canada.
The company compiled its mailing list through information purchased from a third party, supplemented with address information available through the City of Greater Sudbury’s Open Data site.
