BEIJING, China: China’s fertility rate declined to a record low 1.09 children per women of child bearing age in 2022, despite the government’s efforts to increase the country’s number of births, according to the state-owned National Business Daily.
The data from the Population and Development Research Center showed that China had the lowest fertility level among countries with a population of more than 100 million, the newspaper said.
Along with South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, China’s fertility rate is among the world’s lowest.
The government in Beijing is urgently putting in place measures to increase the country’s birth rate, such as providing financial incentives and offering more childcare facilities.
In May, President Xi Jinping headed a meeting to discuss the low birth rate problem.
China has said it will focus on education, science and technology to seek to increase the population, as well as maintain a “moderate fertility” level to ensure future economic growth.
Gender discrimination and traditional stereotypes of women caring for their children are still widespread throughout China, as well as high childcare costs and having to sacrifice their careers, which have discouraged women from having children.
