Small Business Saturday 2023 is here! Running for over a decade, Small Business Saturday is a grassroots campaign that celebrates amazing small businesses and encourages customers to shop locally.
Hull has a plethora of fantastic small businesses across the city. This year, the council has hosted two Hull Business – Your Future breakfast events that were a huge success, with over 130 local businesses attending to find out about support, grants and more.
Here’s our brief guide of where to find just a handful of Hull’s small businesses and how you can support them on Small Business Saturday!
Trinity Market and Hepworth’s Arcade
Lowgate, Hull, HU1 2JH
Originally opened back in 1904, Trinity Market was Hull’s second market hall, mainly for fruit, flowers, and vegetables.
Trinity Market is the perfect place to warm up with a hot cup of coffee from Caffeinated, pick up mouth-watering plant-based bakes from Cinnamon Bakery, or stock up on chocolate for Christmas from Cocoa Chocolatier & Bakehouse.
Sew Sweet Pea is the place to go for your mending, alteration and custom clothing needs. The Shoe Repair and Key Cutting shop ticks off those jobs that have been on your to-do list for ages.
Hepworth’s Arcade adjoins the market and has a treasure trove of shops. It’s the ideal stop for finding everything you need on your Christmas shopping list! Stop by Spin-It Records for your music lovers, J.E Books for your bookworms, and Dinsdale’s Joke Shop for the big kids who love a prank.
Don’t forget that Trinity Market is also home to Trinity Live! Get yourself down to the Market on Thursday evenings for FREE live music and challenge yourself to choose between all the fantastic street food options on offer.
Fruit Market
Queen Street/Humber Street/Humber Dock Street, Hull, HU1 1UU
The Fruit Market is Hull’s latest urban quarter, is full of creativity, enterprise, and colour. Next to Hull’s Marina, the area is brimming with art, fashion, as well as plenty of good food and drink.
Let Mousey Browns and The Glam House & Studio 36 Beauty Clinic get you Christmas Party ready. Find the sweetest 3D advent calendars and Christmas cards at Form Shop & Studio. Choose the perfect gift for your loved ones (or yourself) at Art & Soul.
Get in the festive spirit at Social with tickets to the Red Riding Hood panto from Middle Child Hull.
You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to getting out of the cold with a brilliant array of food and drink on offer, from the most indulgent cruffins at Flour and Feast to the ideal spot for dinner with friends at Ambiente Tapas. Make sure you stop by Fruit Market this festive season.
Paragon Arcade
Paragon Arcade, Hull, HU1 3PQ
Located in the city centre, Paragon Arcade is where you’ll find a cluster of cool and quirky small businesses.
Staying true to its original design from 1896, the arcade regularly hosts small pop events to support the local independents housed within the building. Keep an eye out for their Arcade Cookout evenings – good vibes, good food and good music!
With a great mix of shops including Artisan Flowers, Milchig coffee shop, Stretch Pizza Neapolitan pizzeria, Paragon Tattoo, Out of the Attic Music record shop, and Mya Rose baby and children’s clothing shop, there really is something for everyone in the arcade.
Newland Avenue
Newland Avenue, Hull, HU5 2EJ
A bustling street filled with restaurants, shops and bars, Newland Avenue is a cultural hub for residents. With the university also a short walk away, you’ll always find a buzzing atmosphere within the small businesses down Newland.
Stop by B&M Andrews Butchers to get your pigs and blankets ready for the big day, and Fruitopia for your winter veg! Whether you’re alcohol-free, gluten-free, vegan or a fan of local craft beers, there’s something for you in the cosy community pub, Newland Tap. If you’re looking for a glamourous outfit for the festive season look no further than Bed Boutique for on-trend affordable ladies fashion.
This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to independent businesses on Newland Avenue. Make sure you take some time to walk down and explore them all!
