The catering industry said the business on Christmas Eve saw a more than 10 percent year-on-year decrease as people opted to travel overseas.

Simon Wong Ka-wo, president of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants & Related Trades Limited, stated that some hotel buffets do not require reservations this year, and walk-in customers can still get seats.

Wong believes the overall business volume on Christmas Eve this year was about HK$380 million, compared to nearly HK$430 million last year.

The food veteran added that the flow of people is average in Tsim Sha Tsui and other thriving areas, but the consumer sentiment seems to have weakened.
