LAPEER, MI – FREEdom Fest 2023 will be happening at Torzewski County Park in Lapeer this July.
Hosted by Woodchips BBQ, the event launched three years ago as the brain child of local business owners Patrick Hingst (Woodchips BBQ) and Jessica Harold (Kookys N Cream).
“The first year was meant to be a company picnic and celebration after a turbulent spring of lockdowns that almost bankrupted the businesses,” Hingst said in a Woodchips news release. “The 4th of July is usually a busy day for us, but we decided to close for the day, rent out the Amphitheatre at Torzewksi County Park, cook up a bunch of food, book a band to play, and invite the public to join us at the last second.”
That first year Woodchips BBQ sponsored free admission to the water park and brought enough food to feed hundreds.
The next year, the event now dubbed FREEdom Fest returned with a full slate of local music talent, headlined by Saginaw’s REDBURN, along with different kids entertainers, free water park admission, and free food from Woodchips and Kookys N Cream.
Now moved to Sunday, July 9, and extending hours to noon-10 p.m., FREEdom Fest has evolved into a unique entertainment extravaganza focused on bringing every part of the community together to celebrate.
Updates to the layout have been made to keep any line waiting as short as possible, and many new amenities and stations are being added.
Located at 2051 Pero Lake Road, the event will feature eight different bands, several kids entertainers (magicians, clowns, face painters, etc.), and the Dunk Tank Co. bringing a variety of kids play structures and activities.
“We are swinging for the fences on this one, and luckily, our partners and the community have stepped up to make this dream a reality,” Hingst said. “We have increased the entertainment budget by over 600%, we will have enough food for the first 3,000 guests, and we have been able to keep the cost at exactly $0 for every person that wants to join in this experience with us.”
Musical acts include multi-platinum Southern Fried Country Rap artists the Nappy Roots, along with Bubba Sparxxx, Rock/Rap outfit REDBURN, rockers Westfall, Flint’s Reverend Right-time & the 1st Cuzins of Funk, and more.
