Dr. Carl Jensen explains the reasoning, “Our community college is going to be a bottom up model, and what I mean by that is that we are gonna work in partnership with the business community to develop curriculum, to develop programs, we’re not going come out and say, ‘Okay this is what we’re offering take it or leave it, we’re going say what do you need.’”
He says there will be a number of different speakers sharing their knowledge and thoughts. The point of this meeting, as Dr. Lenaire Ahlum says, is to incorporate all the information gathered and implement it into a working document.
She says this way, the document will better reflect what the community wants in a community college, “Community college has a real pulse on what the workforce needs are within the region that they are targeted to serve, and so, actually, the same needs exist in our area.”
Dr. Ahlum says that the community college not only offers a higher education option for non-traditional students, but it also acts as the unity of a community, “There are people who want this because it will fill a goal in their lives that they’ve never been able to complete.”
