Bubba Watson became one of the big names to join LIV Golf last summer, and the RangeGoats captain has opened up on what the Saudi-funded series has got planned for the future.
Bubba Watson believes LIV Golf ‘s team aspect was exactly what the sport needed, after claiming professional golf had gone ‘stale’ prior to the Saudi-funded series’ emergence.
Watson became one of the starring names to join the breakaway league last summer, and has since taken the position of team captain after kickstarting the RangeGoats in 2023 alongside Talor Gooch, Harold Varner III and Thomas Pieters. Just two months on from their inception, Watson’s team recorded their first LIV title in Singapore on Sunday.
As a result, the RangeGoats were crowned team champions at Sentosa Golf Club, whilst Gooch secured his second successive victory in the individual event.
Since forming last June, LIV Golf has faced plenty of criticism but one aspect that has been key to their rise is the team aspect of their competition, with the players regularly citing it as a huge part of their enjoyment. And it seems the rebel circuit have plans to grow even further, with Watson revealing LIV are looking to have team ‘stadiums’ and ‘academies’ in the near future.
“I know what our business plan is and business model is,” he said in Singapore. “We are talking about having teams from different parts of the world. We are talking about having our own golf courses that, basically, we’ll call them our stadiums. We are talking about having golf academies to help young golfers, but also young golfers that want to play at our level, just like any other sports team around the world.
“So there’s a lot of dreams and aspirations and a lot of things that we’ve already accomplished in less than a year, but we still want to keep going forward.” Amid his comments the two-time Masters champion appeared to take a jibe at his rivals at the PGA Tour, revealing that he felt the professional game had become ‘stale’ in recent times.
Watson went on: “Legacy-wise, I just want to be part of something that was amazing, I believe in. I believe in the right steps and what we are taking. I believe that golf was kind of stale and the only sport that I saw that was missing team atmosphere, we love The Ryder Cup, we love the Presidents Cup, so why not do it all year round?”

The RangeGoats skipper did however warn fans that the proposed plans will not happen overnight, and will mostly likely come in after he has retired. ” It’s not about me or who I am individually. It’s about all of us coming together to start LIV.
“To be part of LIV, and watch the game of golf to grow to a place it’s never been before, and I think so far we are doing it. Obviously not as fast as some people want and not as nice as some people want, but I think we are in the right spot, and ten years from now, it will be a different conversation. I mean, I will probably be retired by then. But it will be fun.”
