Border Fight Set to Derail Ukraine Aid Vote in Senate

WASHINGTON—The Democratic-led Senate headed toward a failed vote on a $110.5 billion package containing a major new tranche of aid for Ukraine, as a fight over demands by Republicans related to U.S. border enforcement corroded bipartisan efforts to help Kyiv repel a nearly two-year-old Russian invasion.

A defeat in the procedural vote Wednesday would mark a major public setback for backers of Ukraine aid and raise fears that there isn’t enough political will in Congress to pass more assistance for Kyiv, which has topped $100 billion since the war began. But its failure could also draw clearer lines on where both parties stand, help lawmakers demonstrate to voters that they are fighting for their priorities and set the stage for several weeks of breakneck talks to reach a compromise before Christmas.
