Since its launch in 2012, Bord Bia’s Origin Green programme has supported over a decade of progress in the Irish food and drink industry’s journey to a more sustainable future. A pioneering sustainability programme, covering the entire supply chain from farm to fork, Origin Green has remained as the world’s only national food and drink sustainability programme, enabling the industry to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect the environment and serve local communities more effectively.
Launched last year in partnership with Bord Bia and the Michael Smurfit Business School at University College Dublin, the Leaders Sustainability Acceleration Programme was designed to create a cohort of senior leaders in the Irish food, drink and horticulture industry, who will champion sustainability throughout their organisations, equipped with the knowledge, the know-how and the tools to embed it into their core business strategies.
Building sustainability leadership at executive level
The programme, aimed at senior leaders in Irish food and drink businesses, represents an important step in the evolution of Origin Green, as it advances and embeds the sustainability agenda across businesses by developing expertise and growing skills at Board and C-Suite level. The sustainability expectations and requirements of global consumers are accelerating, and the programme has been specifically designed to support leaders to leverage commercial growth and establish sustainability as a key business driver.
Sustainability leadership requires board members and senior executives to understand sustainability, its challenges and the strategy and governance issues involved in its management. Additionally, effective reporting on sustainability and metrics which connects sustainability with business outcomes and to have the ability to translate these metrics into strategy and investments is vital.
Speaking about the programme, Director of Quality Assurance and Sustainability at Bord Bia, Deirdre Ryan said; “The commitment to reducing the impact of business on climate change and other Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) goals has gained momentum. The establishment of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) represents one aspect of the inflection point and the momentum of sustainability on the global policy agenda.
The food, drink and horticulture industry is accelerating towards these changes which are having a profound impact on how the industry organises resources and allocates capital.
Our vision for this programme is to continue creating cohorts of senior leaders in the Irish food, drink and horticulture industry, who will champion sustainability throughout their organisations, equipped with the knowledge, the know-how and the tools to embed it into their core business strategies.”
