A  book on Akij Group founder Sheikh Akij Uddin titled ‘Sheikh Akij Uddin: Jibon o Shomoy’ has been published.

The book shed light on various aspects of the life of Sheikh Akij Uddin, one of the leading Bangladeshi entrepreneurs.

The publication festival of the book was held at the ballroom of Pan Pacific Sonargaon in Dhaka on Saturday.

Prime Minister Economic Affairs Advisor Dr Mashiur Rahman was present as the chief guest, said a press release issued on Saturday.

NBR’s former chairman Dr Muhammad Abdul Mazid, Economic Analyst Mamun Rashid, Dhaka University Development Studies Department Chairman Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir and former Dhaka University IBA director Dr Syed Farhat Anwar were also present at the event as speakers.

Anwar Group Chairman Manwar Hossain, Standard Chartered Bangladesh Chief Executive Nasser Ejaz Vijay, ACI Agrolink Limited Managing Director FH Ansarey, IPDC Managing Director and CEO Mominul Islam and others were also present.

Bonik Barta Editor and Publisher Dewan Hanif Mahmud delivered the opening speech.

At the beginning of the program, a documentary about Sheikh Akij Uddin was shown.

NBR former chairman said: “Sheikh Akij Uddin is one of the entrepreneurs and personalities who are shining in the development of industry in Bangladesh. If we do not highlight these people to the new generation of entrepreneurs, then there will be a big gap. Their role behind the economy is very high. A 7-8 year old boy left home with only Tk17. But he did not let his enthusiasm go away. He had no contact with the home. Even though he studied up to 7th standard, his children are highly educated. They are now managing their industrial empire well.”

Economic analyst Mamun Rashid said: “There is a dearth of books or case studies on entrepreneurship in Bangladesh. While studying, I have seen that most of the world’s big businessmen had family businesses. The main crisis of every bank is defaulters. Many businessmen disappear after taking loans. But Akij saheb was different in this regard.”

Dhaka University Development Studies Department Chairman Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir said: “Sheikh Akij Uddin is at the forefront of the history of Bengali Muslim entrepreneurship.”

Dr Masiur Rahman said: “Sheikh Akij Uddin was successful even though he had no formal education. He showed the courage to take new initiatives. If someone does not have an idea about the demand for something, then his investment is never successful.”

Akiz-Bashir Group Managing Director Sheikh Bashir Uddin said: “My father used to make luxury goods himself but he never believed in luxury. He was thrifty but not stingy. I always bow down to my elder brother. My younger brother to me. He speaks with his head down. We had a relationship of sincerity. That was taught by my father.”
