BLAINE, Wash. — First responders were dispatched to a report of a commercial structure fire in the area of Peace Portal Drive and Martin Street in Blaine about 11:10pm on Friday, March 10th.

Approximate location of the fire

Lynden Fire Chief Mark Billmire told Whatcom News the first units arrived to find heavy smoke coming from doors and under eaves around the building.

After gaining access to the building, firefighters found the fire in the spaces above the ceiling. It took hours of firefighters scouring the area above the ceiling throughout the building to ensure no hotspots remained.

Firefighters remained on the scene doing mop up until about 3am.

The business owner was on scene this morning, Saturday, and told Whatcom News that he was looking forward to resuming business soon. He said it is a parcel post business and the warehouse area reportedly did not suffer fire damage but did suffer some smoke damage. He had been told fire damage was limited to an area around the office. “I’d rather my stuff be damaged than my customers’, so that’s a good thing,” he said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation according to Billmire.
