Several mysterious themes and subjects have captivated humans for years. However, the uncanniness of outer space and celestial objects is very hard to match. For years, several filmmakers and directors have made many documentaries about this subject. However, there are a few that will always stand the test of time.
Here is a list of unmissable documentaries about space:
Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey
The American science documentary television series Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey premiered in 2014. It was presented by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. Tyson himself was inspired by Carl Sagan’s show Cosmos: A Personal Voyage when he was a student in high school.
The synopsis of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey, according to National Geographic’s official YouTube channel states, “Hosted by renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, COSMOS will explore how we discovered the laws of nature and found our coordinates in space and time. It will bring to life never-before-told stories of the heroic quest for knowledge and transport viewers to new worlds and across the universe for a vision of the cosmos on the grandest scale.”
Steven Soter and Ann Druyan wrote the show.
One Strange Rock
Produced by Nutopia, One Strange Rock showcased how life survives and flourishes on our planet. It premiered on National Geographic on March 26, 2018.
The synopsis of One Strange Rock according to IMDb reads, “The extraordinary story of Earth and why it is special and uniquely brimming with life among a largely unknown but harsh cosmic arena; astronauts tell the story of Earth through a unique perspective.”
The astronauts who appeared on the show were Chris Hadfield, Nicole Stott, Jeffrey A. Hoffman, Mae Jemison, Leland Melvin, Mike Massimino, Jerry Linenger, and Peggy Whitson.
The Last Man on the Moon
The Last Man on the Moon is the story of Eugene Andrew Cernan from his point of view. He became the eleventh person to walk on the Moon. Furthermore, he is still the most recent person to walk on the Moon (1972).
The synopsis of The Last Man on the Moon according to IMDb reads, “When Apollo astronaut Gene Cernan stepped off the moon in December 1972 he left his footprints and his daughter’s initials in the lunar dust. Only now is he ready to share his epic but deeply personal story of fulfillment, love, and loss.”
Eugene Cernan and Mark Craig wrote this historic documentary.
Encounters
Encounters was released on Netflix earlier this year. This four-episodic docuseries shed light on true stories of human contact with phenomena from other worlds.
According to Netflix’s official YouTube channel, the synopsis of Encounters reads, “For decades, we’ve relegated alien encounters to the realm of conspiracy, dismissing those who’ve seen the unexplainable. Now congressional hearings on UFOs bringing revelations from whistleblowers about clandestine Pentagon programs and major journalistic institutions confirm that…we are not alone.”
It further states, “As told from the perspective of firsthand experiencers – in the places where the sightings occurred – and guided by cutting-edge scientists and military personnel, the series goes beyond the science to highlight the profoundly human impact of these encounters on lives, families, and communities.”
Encounters is directed by Yon Motskin. Furthermore, Amblin Television, Boardwalk Pictures, and Vice Studios executively produced it.
