Berlin Brandenburg airport improves security booking system

Berlin Brandenburg airport has simplified access to its BER Runway service which allows passengers to book a time slot to go through security.

The airport introduced the BER Runway system in August 2022 as a way to reduce waiting times going through security. It allows all passengers to reserve a free time slot online for access to security in Terminal 1 and has been used by more than 800,000 travellers since its inception.

The latest developments include the removal of the need for passengers to show a QR code at the airport. Instead, they can now simply present their boarding pass which will automatically detect the BER Runway reservation.

Travellers can also now reserve a time slot seven days before their flight – previously they had only been able to make BER Runway bookings three days in advance.

Thomas Hoff Andersson, the airport’s chief operating officer, said: “We are constantly striving to make our services even better. The new BER Runway makes it even easier for all travellers to reserve a security check timeslot well in advance and only requires the use of a boarding pass for automatic access.

“In addition, capacity will be increased for the summer holidays, so that all security controls at Entrance 4 in Terminal 1 can be used for BER Runway, if necessary.”

Earlier this year, Lufthansa launched a new service, known as BER Traveller, at Berlin Brandenburg allowing travellers to use facial recognition to access a priority lane for security checks.
