Ben Dunne, the high-profile businessman, has died at the age of 74.
He is understood to have passed away after suffering a heart attack while on holiday in Dubai. The Department of Foreign Affairs last night said it was aware of the death of an Irishman in the United Arab Emirates.
Dunne, a successful and popular entrepreneur, had a colourful career. He was the former director of the retailer Dunnes Stores, which his father founded in 1944. More recently he became known for his chain of budget gyms, to which he gave his name. The business struggled during the Covid pandemic, when all his outlets had to close during lockdowns. Yet he turned it around and took the group back to profitability.
