Bay of Quinte Small Business Week fast approaching

Small Business Week across Canada is celebrated the third week of October, and this year’s Bay of Quinte Small Business Week will run from October 16 to October 20.

Statistics show that businesses classified as micro or small businesses make up 98 per cent of all the employers in Canada. Ontario has more than 400,000 small businesses making up 37 per cent of the total number of small and medium sized enterprises (SME’s) across Canada. Nearly 74 per cent of Canadian companies have less than 10 employees and women lead or co-lead one third of all SME’s. Baby boomers own the most businesses at 42 per cent but the businesses owned by millennials has grown to more than 24 per cent.

BDC Small Business Week is an annual entrepreneurship event that the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) has organized for 44 years. Every year, more than 10,000 entrepreneurs gather to learn, network, and celebrate Canada’s dreamers and doers.

The purpose of the week is to highlight the importance of small and medium sized companies to the Canadian and local economies.

This year the Bay of Quinte Chambers of Commerce from Belleville, Prince Edward County and Quinte West have joined forces to bring a weeks’ worth of events to our local businesses.

Events take place every day starting on Monday Oct 16 at 11 a.m. Isabelle Hudon, president of the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) will give a key-note presentation and officially kick off Small Business Week at The Trent Port Marina in Trenton. This event will acknowledge the importance of SMEs in the Bay of Quinte Region with key messages from local Chambers, MPs, MPPs and Mayors. There are four workshops, one business trade show, one business roundtable and one mega mingle offered from Tuesday to Friday, all designed to help businesses access relevant information and network across Quinte. The events are a combination of live, virtual and hybrid to give attendees the choice of how they would like to attend. Thursday October 19 is the Quinte Business Achievement Awards, held at The National Air Force Museum of Canada, 8 Wing Trenton. Representatives from local Chambers, BDC, Trenval, QEDC (Quinte Economic Development Commission) and RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) form the organizing committee to ensure the success of this program.
