Hello A-J readers!
We had a mix of interesting business news break this week.
First, we learned about a lawsuit involving Rodeo 4, formerly known as Charley B’s, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). According to the lawsuit, ASCAP is suing Rodeo 4 for copyright infringement, as Lubbock’s largest nightclub did not have permission or license to play ASCAP members’ music.
“Our goal, as an organization, is to ensure that our members … are properly compensated and fairly paid when their music is performed in public by a business,” said Jackson Wagener, with ASCAP’s legal team. “For members who aren’t actively touring, or selling merchandise because they aren’t a famous performer, they really depend on their ASCAP royalties to pay their bills, put their kids through school, and handle their daily expenses.” Rodeo 4, for their part, hadn’t returned a request for comment by the end of the week.
