Annual pitch competition to help turn Ionia, Montcalm business dreams into reality

GREENVILLE — Entrepreneurs in Ionia and Montcalm counties can compete for cash prizes and turn their business ideas into reality. 

The third annual MIPitch competition is scheduled for 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, at The Winter Inn, 100 N. Lafayette St., in Greenville. It is presented by the Ionia County Economic Alliance and the Montcalm Economic Alliance in partnership with The Right Place, Inc. 

MIPitch sees entrepreneurs, business owners and dreamers living in Ionia and Montcalm counties pitch their ideas and compete for thousands of dollars in cash prizes, according to a news release. 

Submissions for MIPitch will be accepted through Monday, Aug. 21. Anyone wishing to submit for the competition can visit rightplace.org/events/mipitch-2023. Business ideas can range from new business concepts to catalytic additions for existing businesses. 

The goal of MIPitch is to help launch new businesses and cultivate entrepreneurial growth in Ionia and Montcalm counties, said Ryan Wilson, executive director of the Ionia County Economic Alliance and event co-coordinator. 

“Entrepreneurship continues to be critical to the success of rural communities, especially as they continue the economic recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Wilson said. “When people start and grow businesses, they contribute to the economic diversity of their area. These unique local businesses become differentiators for their communities. Our goal is to help strengthen business growth in Ionia and Montcalm counties.”

A committee of local business and community leaders will review and score all submissions, according to the release. They will select finalists to present their pitches at the Sept. 21 event. The top finalists will earn cash prizes. 

“Small businesses are the backbone of rural communities. MIPitch, is an opportunity for residents of Montcalm and Ionia counties to put their napkin dream to reality,” said Jakob Bigard, executive director of the Montcalm Economic Alliance and event co-coordinator. “This competition will promote prosperity in our communities.” 

The public can attend the free event Sept. 21. Anyone wishing to attend can RSVP at rightplace.org/events/mipitch-2023. The business after-hours event is co-hosted by the Ionia Area Chamber of Commerce, Belding Area Chamber of Commerce and Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce.
