LAKE MONTICELLO, VA – Annemarie (Plotner) Maki, 80, of Lake Monticello, died on Thursday, July 20, 2023, at her home surrounded by loving family members. Annemarie was known to many as “Oma”.
She was born in 1943, in Pormitz, Germany to the late Kurt and Hilde (Weiser) Plotner.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Charles Maki.
Annemarie lived in Pormitz until January of 1954, when she left East Germany with her parents to live in Hof, West Germany. She completed middle school, went to business school for 2 years, and worked in a department store. Annemarie met her late husband, Dale, while he was serving in the Air Force and stationed in Hof. On March 27, 1961, she left her home country to immigrate to the United States to be with her great love, Dale. The couple married on April 15, 1961, in the Concordia Lutheran Church of Palmer, MI and spent four years in Milwaukee, WI, before moving to Gwinn, MI.
On December 7, 1971, Annemarie became a naturalized citizen of the United States. She was very proud of her citizenship. She lived in Gwinn for 50 years and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Church Women and served as a Sunday School teacher. She was a Girl Scout leader for several years, worked at the dining hall on K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base for 15 years, and was Bakery Manager at the Gwinn IGA store for five years.
She loved to travel and was able to visit New York City, San Diego, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. When Dale was alive, they enjoyed traveling to Nevada to visit Dale’s brother, Don, and sister-in-law, Julia. In her retired years, much of her time was spent at the log cabin her husband built, “Camp Popple”, where they four-wheeled and she fed the wild animals. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking for her family and friends. In the afternoon, she loved having a cup of coffee along with chocolate, or something sweet, while watching her favorite soap opera. She was an avid Outlander fan. She cheered for the Green Bay Packers.
Annemarie raised four children, who she dearly loved, and who gave her much pride: William C. Maki (Heidi) of Midland, MI, Alan D. Maki of Orlando, FL, Janice D. McCormick (Robert) of Lake Monticello, VA, and Curtis D. Maki (Karen) of Brooklyn, MI. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, whom she loved greatly and spent a lot of time with: Danielle, Ethan, Sarah, Dylan, Nicole, Brayden, Madeline, and Jonas and two great-grandchildren: Hope Jane and Rylin Marie.
“Don’t be sad!
Oma is with Opa again and we will watch over you. We will always be in your hearts and someday we will all be together again, and our family will be complete.”
A brother, Karl Plotner (Christel) and two nephews, Wolfgang and Markus, all of Germany, also survive.
A memorial service celebrating this wonderful, much loved “Oma”, will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Gwinn, MI on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in her name be given to Grace Lutheran Church, Gwinn, MI or your local Humane Society/SPCA.
