Previously rejected plans to build a potential round-the-clock Amazon delivery depot on Weybridge Business Park have been approved after developers tweaked the blueprints.
Runnymede Borough Council unanimously threw out plans in March for a 20,000 square metre warehouse saying it would be overbearing and have a damaging environmental impact. They said the noise and pollution would be severely detrimental to residents and users of the Wey Navigation System.
A residents group in Addlestone last year called the plans “crazy” -they came together after they felt not enough people were made aware of the initially proposed nine-acre site. One resident told SurreyLive: “If it gets approved then my mind will be blown,” she added. “It’s not the right site for something this size and scale.”
Undeterred, the developers returned with revised plans that break up what was one large warehouse into smaller units with a central service yard area.

A spokesperson for Runnymede Borough Council said, about the October 25 planning committee said: “[We debated] the amendments to the design from the previous submission, and whether potential impact upon amenity and the highway network could be appropriately managed and mitigated.
“Members noted the significantly improved design and were pleased with the reduction in bulk and mass as well as additional landscaping.
“Members also noted that in the absence of an objection from either the Local Highway Authority or National Highways a reason for refusal on highway grounds could not be substantiated.
“With regards to amenity the committee determined that, subject to additional conditions that controlled the hours of operations at the site (7am to 9pm) and a condition restricting the amount of floor space that could be occupied by one occupier, that the development would be considered acceptable in planning terms.
“As such a resolution was reached to approve the planning application.” It means the derelict site will be put into use again despite strong public opposition.
The council’s consultation led to 283 letters of representation being sent in with comments ranging from the development being “visually overbearing” and “out of character” while others raised concerns about safety from HGVs using the site.
