Chairman of the Nigerian National League (NNL), George Aluo, has described the 1XBet Cup slated to debut next month as a welcome contribution to the country’s grassroots football development.
Aluo, who said the championship, which kicks off on October 3, will unearth hidden talents from different parts of the country, advised clubs in all levels of football to key into the programme in their hunt for fresh talents.
Speaking during the unveiling of the championship in Lagos during the week, Aluo said: “We need more of these competitions across the country as it would give hitherto unknown talents opportunity to show what they can do.
“I know that many clubs will throng the match venues to scout for players; so, the organisers must get it right to encourage as many players as possible to participate in the competition.”
The 1XBet Cup is a 40-team grassroots football championship, which will hold at various centres across Lagos State.
Winners of the championship will get N1 million star prize, while the runners up will earn N500,000, just as the third placed team will take N300,000.
There will also be individual prizes for players who excel in the championship.
Explaining the idea behind the championship,
the initiator, Waidi Akanni, said he was motivated by the need to take football back to the grassroots.
“Grassroots football development holds the key to the future of Nigerian football,” he said, praising the management of 1XBET for agreeing to sponsor the championship.
Also speaking on the championship, chairman of 1XBET Nigeria, Dr. Femi Babalola, said his firm agreed to participate in the project because the idea was in line with the company’s vision.
“Our business thrives on football. That’s why we want to identify with the development of the sport from the grassroots. It is not only in Lagos. We want to see this programme spread to all nooks and crannies of this country.”
The organisers explained that the championship is for non-league clubs in Lagos, saying that the state is divided into five conferences with each conference parading eight teams.
The teams will further be grouped into four teams per group and will play in a round robin format to determine the group winners.
