As it stands, there are six new bakkies coming to South Africa this year, assuming their model-specific launch dates aren’t pushed back for any given reason.

Bakkies have become a common sight on South African roads and are favoured by many people across the country. The popularity of bakkies in South Africa can be attributed to several factors.

Bakkies are tough and durable, making them perfect for the country’s diverse landscapes and challenging terrains. They can easily handle the demanding conditions of both urban and rural areas, making them a versatile choice for many drivers.

Additionally, bakkies offer versatility like no other vehicle. Whether transporting goods, accommodating passengers, or embarking on adventurous off-road escapades, bakkies cater to various needs.

2023 was a notable year for bakkies, with the launch of exciting new models like the Ford Ranger Raptor, the second-generation VW Amarok, the Isuzu D-Max X-Rider, the flagship JAC T9 and GWM P-Series LTD, and limited-edition versions of the Mitsubishi Triton and Toyota Hilux.

The only thing better than this would be even more new 4x4s in store for South African motorists, and that’s exactly what’s happening in 2024.

There are plans to introduce at least seven different models in South Africa in 2024. Two of these models are new Ford Ranger variants known as the Tremor and Platinum. Furthermore, Ford has announced that it will be launching a  plug-in hybrid version of the Ranger in late 2024.

However, it is not confirmed yet if the semi-electric bakkie will be available in South Africa.

The JAC T9  was launched this year with a turbocharged diesel engine, but it is expected to receive a plug-in hybrid and a battery-electric variant in 2024.

Additionally, Mitsubishi’s next-generation Triton is expected to make its debut in the coming months, as well as the facelifted Jeep Gladiator for those who appreciate its modular body design.

There are also a number of bakkies that could still arrive in 2024 but have not been given a release date, such as the facelifted Isuzu D-Max, the Toyota Hilux Champ, and the new Nissan Navara, which shares a platform with the upcoming Mitsubishi.

The six bakkies that have been confirmed by their manufacturers to be arriving in South Africa in 2024 are listed below, as outlined by TopAuto.
