Honda has announced that its all-new Civic Type R will go on sale this week at a starting price of R979,000. Honda has designated 60 units to South Africa, and there are reportedly already 25 pre-orders.
The new Type R features an all-around facelift and a high-performance VTEC motor, making it the most powerful Civic Honda has produced by adding 7kW and 20Nm more than the outgoing model.
Although not as aggressively styled as its predecessor, the next iteration of the world’s most potent series-produced front-wheel-drive hot hatch will surely excite local enthusiasts.
Features
Inside, the Honda Civic Type R is decked out with a wide selection of amenities included in the price tag.
According to TopAuto, these take the form of model-exclusive sports seats in red and black suede, a honeycomb dash, stainless steel sports pedals, a suede multifunction steering wheel, a 10.2-inch digital driver’s display, and a 9-inch touchscreen that enables wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as in-car navigation.
Other features comprise automatic LED lights with high-beam assist, a wireless charger, a 12-speaker Bose stereo, dual-zone climate control, rain-sensing wipers, a rearview camera with all-round parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and keyless entry and start.
Taking care of safety, the Honda further benefits from forward collision warnings, lane-departure warnings, road-departure mitigation, ABS with emergency brake assist, agile handling assist, automatic brake hold, and six airbags.
Performance
The new Type R uses the brand’s 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a six-speed box to put out a maximum of 235kW and 420Nm.
This bump in output results in a 0-100km/h sprint that has been cut down by 0.3 seconds for a total of 5.5 seconds, while the top speed remains unchanged at 272km/h.
A limited-slip differential, adaptive suspension system, and rev matching are standard features of the latest Type R’s drivetrain, the latter of which facilitates smoother downshifts that put less strain on the clutch, gearbox, and motor, and it rides on distinctive matte black 19-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres, noted TopAuto.
Four driving modes can also be cycled through via a toggle on the centre console – Comfort, Sport, +R, and Individual.
Each new Civic Type R purchase includes a 5-year/200,000km warranty, a 5-year/90,000km service plan, and three years of AA roadside assistance.
