Banking group Absa has confirmed that it now offers Home Affairs Smart ID and Passport services at six of its branches in South Africa, taking the total number of bank branches in the pilot to 29.
The confirmation follows the announcement from the Department of Home Affairs this week that the pilot with the banks would be extended to March 2024.
An Absa spokesperson said that at the inception of the bank’s partnership with the DHA in 2017, the group launched with five branches offering Smart ID and passport application services.
“Over this period, these branches have performed well. DHA services were recently activated at a sixth branch in Stellenbosch, Western Cape,” it said.
Services at the Stellenbosch branch were activated in July, it said.
The DHA currently only lists 27 bank branches on its website, and reported an incorrect number of participating branches per bank.
It listed Nedbank as having six branches in the pilot, but the bank confirmed it only had five taking part. The DHA website also lists Nedbank Nelspruit as being offline, but the bank said that services are fully operational.
The DHA also counted five branches for Absa, but this has now been confirmed as six.
The total breakdown of 29 branches is as follows:
