Toyota South Africa (TSAM) intends to introduce at least one more vehicle to South Africa before the end of 2023 – the Toyota Crown – a car never seen on South African roads.

The ever-popular carmaker has treated South African motorists to several great releases – including a refreshed Fortuner, the GR Corolla with its high-performance capabilities, a manual variant of the GR Supra, the all-new Urban Cruiser, and a revamped entry-level Agya now known as the Vitz.

The success of Toyota in South Africa is now no surprise to many as it features as the country’s most popular car brand every month – shown in Naamsa’s monthly New Vehicle Sales report.

As of May 2023, Toyota continues as the most popular brand in South Africa, selling 11,395 vehicles. This is partly due to the continued popularity of its flagship bakkie – the Toyota Hilux – which sold 2,798 units.

The Crown will mark Toyota’s fifth partially-electrified model to be sold domestically – joining the Corolla Sedan, Corolla Cross, Prius, and RAV4.

What to expect

According to TopAuto, the Toyota Crown was planned to hit the showrooms in the first quarter of 2023, but its launch date was pushed out by a few months.

Toyota noted that the Crown would be powered by a 2.5-litre parallel-hybrid drivetrain producing 176kW at a claimed average fuel consumption of 4.4l/100km.

TopAuto added that this setup resembles the RAV4 E-Four, featuring a 2.5-litre petrol engine paired with electric motors on both axles and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The internal combustion engine delivers 139kW, which adds to the electric units’ 89kW and 40kW for a total system output of around 175kW, which is sent to all four wheels.

TSAM has remained tight-lipped regarding the remaining specifications of the Crown.

However, TopAuto suggested that the new model would include the following:

  • Heated, ventilated, and electric leather seats;
  • A comprehensive 360-degree camera system;
  • Dual-zone climate control;
  • An around-view camera system;
  • A modern digital instrument cluster;
  • A user-friendly touchscreen infotainment system;
  • Keyless entry and start;
  • An electronically-adjustable steering column; and
  • A luxurious sunroof.

In terms of dimensions, the four-door Crown is quite spacious, measuring 4,930mm in length, 1,840mm in width, and 1,540mm in height. This makes it 135mm longer than the Fortuner but 15mm narrower.

There are already at least two Crown examples undergoing testing locally. With its imminent arrival, we can expect to witness a growing number of these vehicles on the roads soon, added Top Auto.

The South African pricing and local specifications for the Toyota Crown are expected to be released closer to the launch date.
