Kolkata: Hundreds of Bangladeshi supporters on Saturday queued outside the Eden Gardens since early noon to cheer for their team but the day didn’t end well as Shakib & Co. lost to the Netherlands.They wore their team jerseys, carried their national flag and had their faces painted but the jubilation gave way to despair in the second half of the match as Bangladesh lost wickets at regular intervals and fell short of the target set by the Netherlands.According to hotel owners in and around the New Market area, more than 1,000 fans arrived from Bangladesh to watch their team play at the Eden Gardens. “I usually visit Kolkata for business, but this trip is purely recreational. I want to watch our team play at the Eden Gardens. The team has not won many matches in this World Cup but we are fans and support the team no matter what happens,” said Mohammed Abdullah, who has come in a group of eight people all the way from Rajshahi. The easy connectivity and several modes of transport between Kolkata and Bangladesh helped fans plan their visit conveniently.“I applied for leave from work a month in advance to come and watch the match in Kolkata,” said Moin Ahmed, who has come from Dhaka. Samsul Alam, who has been selling sports goods merchandise since the 1996 World Cup, said: “Since India is not playing today and flags of Bangladesh are in demand, I have made a temporary shift.” Imad Hussain Bapi, who arrived on Friday morning with his two cousins, had to negotiate his way through the carnival crowd on Friday afternoon to pick up the tickets from the counter at Mohammedan Sporting Club. “I booked the tickets online and were required to pick up the hard copy from the counter here. Since no taxis were plying due to the carnival, I had to walk down the entire stretch from Marquis Street to get the tickers,” said Imad.
