A fire ripped through a well-known barbershop at a commercial plaza on Ernest Avenue in London’s south-end early Tuesday morning, causing an estimated $300 000 of damage,  but no injuries.

The London Fire Department arrived on scene at the commercial plaza at Ernest and Nixon Avenues at 1 a.m., where firefighters were met with heavy black smoke billowing from the barbershop’s front door, according to Platoon Chief Gary Mosburger.

“We were able to bring the fire under control rather quickly, within 20 to 30 minutes,” he told CBC News Tuesday. “There was actually a very limited amount of fire once we were able to find it. There was a lot of smoke involved.”

“Obviously with the amount of smoke, it did migrate through the rest of the commercial area. The other businesses were affected by smoke migration.”

At the neighbouring Barajon restaurant, Ashraf Ghrabeen could be seen mopping the water seeping into his business through the wall on Tuesday, the smell of smoke still pervasive from the night before.

He said his business would remain open despite the fire next door.

Meanwhile, the Berenice Barbershop where the fire began, is closed. A sign on the shop’s facade said the barbers are still offering their services at neighbouring salon Berenice Plus.

Firefighters say the damage could have been worse, but the flames melted a nearby water line, which kept the flames at bay until fire crews arrived on-scene.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
