Bellefonte said goodbye to a longtime presence in the community, while Boalsburg welcomed a brewery and a bike shop. Read on for more Centre County business news from April.

Openings

  • Boal City Brewing officially opened on the grounds of the Boal Mansion Museum at at 235 Old Boalsburg Road, Boalsburg.

  • Elsewhere in Boalsburg, The Bike Roost had its grand opening. The bike sales and service shop took over the space formerly occupied by Riley on Main at 101 E. Main St.

Closings and endings

  • Weirdoughs Custom Pizzeria, 204 E. College Ave. in downtown State College, closed after two-plus years. Owner Joseph Boss said the lease had been terminated.

  • Plumb’s Drug Store in Bellefonte closed after 72 years in business. The business at 105 N. Allegheny St. was bought by CVS.

  • Delta Air Lines announced it will suspend service from University Park Airport in early June due to a shortage of pilots and crew members.

Familiar faces in new places

Apple Hill Antiques moved to its new location at 2221 E. College Ave., formerly Tubbies Bedrooms, for a May 1 opening. The State College Food Bank bought the former antique shop’s former property at 169 Gerald St.

Business people

Eric Engelbarts was named executive director of the Happy Valley Sports & Entertainment Alliance. Englebarts previously served as executive director of the Michigan Sports Alliance, where he created the State Games of Michigan, an event that brings in more than 10,000 people and has an annual employment and economic impact of $3.25 million. “We look forward to working with Eric and the HVSEA Board as they work to capitalize on the tremendous opportunity we see for Happy Valley to grow into a sought-after destination for marquee events and tournaments,” Happy Valley Adventure Bureau President and CEO Fritz Smith said in a press release.

What’s new at Mount Nittany Health?

Mount Nittany Health held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of the renovated dialysis space at Mount Nittany Medical Center. “This space includes everything needed to provide dialysis treatments for individuals whose kidneys are failing,” Mount Nittany Health said in a press release. The four-bay unit is twice the space of the previous area and offers remote telemetry capabilities and a new filtration water system, Mount Nittany said. The room also contains large windows with plenty of natural light for patients. The dialysis area serves 40 to 90 patients a month and was designed to offer greater privacy.
