Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has taken Sydneysiders heading to work by surprise as she embarked on a bike ride through the Harbour City’s cyclepaths – but it was not all smooth sailing as the stylish royal was forced to stop seconds later.
Princess Mary has arrived in Australia for her first official engagement in her homeland in over a decade.
The Hobart-born princess has just completed trips to Vanuatu and Fiji, where she raised awareness of the impacts of climate change in the Pacific.
The mother-of-four made a grand entrance on Friday morning at Hyde Park in the city dressed in tailored emerald green silk pants paired with a white top and black blazer.
She swapped out her regular stylish heels for a comfortable pair of white and blush pink Nike sneakers for the short bike ride during peak hour.
Princess Mary, 51, greeted the waiting media as she briefly spoke with officials about the route she would be taking.
After a quick debrief, she tied her long brunette tresses into a pony tail as she was introduced to the bike she would be riding and put on her helmet.
“No one looks good in a bike helmet, but safety first,” the Tasmanian-born Princess said as she adjusted the straps to ensure it fit snuggly.
“I’m looking forward to this bike ride. It’s a beautiful day, it’s wonderful to be here.”

A woman helped adjust the height of the bike seat before she jumped on and was left surprised by one particular feature of the bicycle.
“You’ve even got a mirror,” Mary was heard saying.
She waved and rode down College St but was forced to stop suddenly about 20 metres later to adjust her pants which were threatening to catch on the chain.
Officials, a team of bodyguards and NSW Police following on bikes had to quickly stop behind Mary as she struggled to roll up the silk trousers which kept falling.
A woman then appeared to hand the Danish Princess two rubber bands or hair ties to hold the pants in place at knee-length.
Mary later hopped on the light rail and exited at the Town Hall stop on George St, but in another awkward moment the automatic doors kept opening and closing.
Two security guards had to pry the door open so the Princess and Sydney Mayor Clover Moore could exit safely.
Princess Mary has been on tour in the Pacific Ocean region to raise awareness about the consequences of climate change.
She had earlier visited Fiji and Vanuatu before she arrived in Australia on Thursday.
The mother-of-four, who is married to Prince Frederick, will meet Danish business representatives “involved in the green transition” in the country and “a number of Danish-led projects related to sustainable construction and transportation”.
Mary will make her next public appearance at King Charles’ coronation on May 6.
