Air Canada has agreed to purchase 9.5 million litres of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from specialist producer Neste to power flights from San Francisco International Airport, the companies announced on Friday (21 April).
The Canadian flag carrier said its latest purchase of SAF, which will be blended with conventional jet fuel, represents a five-fold increase in SAF procurement year over year.
“SAF comprises one of our core pillars in pursuing our net-zero emission targets,” said Air Canada president and CEO, Michael Rousseau.
“[This purchase] is an important step towards our target of one per cent fuel to be SAF by 2025, supporting our journey towards our 2050 net zero decarbonisation goals,” he added.
The carrier said corporate customers can purchase SAF through its Leave Less Travel Program, which also includes carbon offsets, to mitigate their carbon footprint related to travel.
Michael Sargeant, vice president Americas from Neste’s renewable aviation business unit, said the company is “proud” to support Air Canada and is “committed to helping the aviation industry move towards a more sustainable future”.
Neste works with a number of major airlines and rail companies, including a deal inked with Deutsche Bahn earlier this week, and is looking to increase annual SAF production to 1.5 million tons per annum by the end of 2023.
