“We want it to be something that people are proud of within the community and something that we can put our names on the River Mill,” Casey Development President Ory Kalenkosky said to the Herald-Zeitung. “Our theme for the project, similar to what we believe New Braunfels is, is one of one, you know, establishing that New Braunfels is a city that is one of itself.”
River Mill was built in 1923 and was the largest employer in Comal County for most of its time in service. The mill was known for its denim and cotton textiles, according to a Community Impact report. It ceased all operations in 2005.
The mixed-use development will have bar, retail, restaurant, residential, and hotel developments on site. There will be a few public amenities like a hiking and biking trail, Kalenkosky said in the report. The first phase of the development will be completed in 24 to 30 months. The demolition will take roughly 60 to 90 days before construction starts.
Casey Development, a San Antonio-based development firm, acquired the River Mill in July 2022, according to the Herald-Zeitung. Even though the River Mill is being torn down for a new property, Casey Development wants to honor New Braunfels’ German roots, architecture, and the mill itself.
“This is home to us, so we’re not outsiders just trying to come in and fit something in, but you know, really trying to take a close look at what can continue to complement what we already have here in New Braunfels and add to it,” said Kalenkosky, who previously lived in New Braunfels for 12 years. “I think that we’re on the right path for that, and we’re excited about how we can continue to shape and reshape the landscape of New Braunfels.”
