With origins that date all the way back to Palermo in Italy, Little Italy celebrated 40 years of doing business Saturday at its location off West Avenue near the intersection of Blanco.
The Visocaro family opened the restaurant in San Antonio in 1983 after operating a pizzeria in New York.
Little Italy envokes plenty of history and ambiance with Dean Martin songs playing in the background. The restaurant walls are lined with old family photos and awards from local news outlets for serving some of the best Italian food in the city. The recipes created by Angelo and Paola Visocaro are still used to this day, as the restaurant is now run by their son Dominick Visocaro.
“I believe Little Italy’s longevity and success are largely due to our family’s and our staff’s love of the food, love of the restaurant and love of our customers,” Dominick said. “I also give a lot of credit to our dad who developed and perfected so many of the dishes on the menu.”

When the Express-News did its 52 Weeks of Pizza series, the Angelo’s Special was listed as a Top 10 pie. Served Sicilian style, it comes with sausage, pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, garlic, bell peppers, meatballs, black olives, green olives and anchovies.

One of the trademarks of Little Italy is the serving of a complimentary slice of cheese pizza prior to ordering, similar to the ways that a Mexican restaurant will deliver an order of chips and salsa.
“It gave diners a chance to find out how good our pizza is,” Dominick said.
The pizza truly is outstanding, but there are also many other menu options that represent Italy in its finest forms. You can’t go wrong with the house-made lasagna, manicotti, seafood options and, of course, spaghetti and meatballs. Little Italy has a wide variety of wine and beer options.
For dessert, grab some cannolis.
