EDITOR’S NOTE: The Eastern Lake County Chamber of Commerce on March 16 hosted government officials from its communities to provide details on significant projects for 2023 and cite accomplishments from 2022. This is one in a series of articles detailing the speeches that were given.

Construction of new businesses over the past six years has transformed the Interstate 90 and Route 528 interchange in Madison Village into a bustling commercial district.

That point was emphasized by Madison Village Councilman Dan Donaldson at the recent Eastern Lake County Chamber of Commerce Community Reps Update program.

“It’s kind of fun watching the interchange develop,” said Donaldson, who’s served on council for about 11 years.

In November, Love’s Travel Stop and a Sheetz store became the newest businesses to open at the I-90 and Route 528 interchange. Love’s and Sheetz are based on the south and north sides of the interchange, respectively.

Both businesses feature convenience stores, food-service outlets and fueling stations for cars and tractor-trailers.

Donaldson also said that Great Lakes Power is constructing a new world headquarters directly east of Love’s and south of Interstate 90.

“This is a building that’s going up now and just keeps getting bigger and bigger every time you drive by,” he said.

Founded in 1973, Great Lakes Power is a full-line distributor, manufacturer and rebuilder of power transmission products and accessories. The company will consolidate its current headquarters at 7455 Tyler Blvd. in Mentor with a service center it operates at 3691 Shepard Road in Perry Township and move them to the new building in Madison Village when it’s completed.

Madison Village also has been welcoming greater numbers of visitors over the past four years, thanks to the addition of two new hotels near the northwest corner of the I-90 and Route 528 interchange.

The Holiday Inn Express & Suites and Hampton Inn both opened in 2019. Since then, both have become popular lodging spots for people who want to visit wineries in the Grand River Valley viticultural area of Lake, Ashtabula and Geauga counties; as well as college sports teams and fans who are heading to the Spire Institute, an athletic complex in Geneva that hosts NCAA swimming and diving and track and field events.

“So we’re very happy to have Sheetz and Love’s, Great Lakes Power and our two hotels,” Donaldson said.

When it comes to infrastructure improvements, Donaldson said that a multimillion sanitary sewer interconnection project is underway in Madison Village.

The endeavor involves constructing a new trunk line to convey the village’s wastewater to Lake County’s sanitary sewer pump station. That station is located near Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Hubbard Road in Madison Township.

Lake County then will complete a companion project involving the installation of a new trunk line to direct the village’s sanitary sewage to the Lake County Utilities Department Wastewater Treatment Plant on Cashen Road in Madison Township.

Once the interconnection is finished and functioning, the village will stop accepting and treating wastewater, and decommission its wastewater treatment plant on Middle Ridge Road.

Donaldson said the project isn’t expected to be completed until at least August of this year.
