TOKYO — Japan has slashed its reliance on Russian coal as power companies and other buyers have sought different sources for the fuel, such as Indonesia and South Africa.

Japan imported 230,000 tonnes of thermal coal from Russia in February, 73% less than a year earlier, Ministry of Finance trade data shows. Russian coal accounted for just 2% of total imports, down from 9% a year before.
