Office-sharing business downtown pushes back opening

EDWARDSVILLE — A car crash at a building downtown last summer has led this spring to the delay of a new business opening.

In June 2022, a driver making a turn from westbound Vandalia Street onto northbound North Main Street in downtown Edwardsville suffered a medical condition and failed to complete the turn. Instead, she crashed into the southeast corner of the Mark Twain Building.

According to Edwardsville police, a mid- to late-2000s Chevrolet Impala struck a traffic signal at the northwest corner of West Vandalia and North Main streets. The signal, in turn, hit the building at 101 West Vandalia St., which resulted in a broken window.

“The driver had some sort of medical issue causing her to miss the turn,” said Deputy Police Chief Michael Lybarger. “She struck a light pole and the light pole fell into the building, causing some minor damage. The driver was transported to the hospital.”

Fire Chief James Whiteford verified the driver had only minor injuries and that she was the lone occupant in the car.

Since that time, a business named Regus, a new co-working space, bought the location and planned a March 2023 opening. The company plans to provide office space, co-working spaces, virtual offices and meeting rooms.

But a sales manager who covers the Regus office spaces in St. Louis and the Metro East said this week that structural damage related to the car-building accident last year has delayed the Edwardsville location’s opening.

The structure must be repaired, inspected by city officials and approved for occupancy.

City engineer Ryan Zwijack said he knows of nothing from his department that would impede the opening; he suspects an insurance company delay may be involved. He said the window and traffic light have been replaced.

According to the company website, the opening is now set for October.
