Pilates instructor collects 3,110 panties for reusable sanitary pad kits
PORTSMOUTH — Club Pilates Portsmouth instructor Lindsey Burns collects 3,110 panties for Kenya Connect’s Wings Poa Reusable Sanitary Pad Kits.
Lindsey Burns, a Pilates instructor at Club Pilates Portsmouth and Kenya Connect Board member, collected over 3,000 pairs of girls’ underpants to include in the Wings Poa Reusable Sanitary Pad kits. During a recent volunteer trip to Kenya, Lindsey helped distribute the kits which included the panties to secondary school girls at Wakela Secondary School in Wamunyu. Many girls in Kenya, especially those living in rural parts of Kenya, experience period poverty and do not have access or cannot afford sanitary pads. Non-profit Kenya Connect created the Wing Poa reusable sanitary pad kits which are now being made by local women. “When we learned from Head Teachers that girls were missing four to five days of school per month during their periods, we knew we needed to develop a solution,” shared Executive Director, Sharon Runge.
Lindsey held the collection at Club Pilates Portsmouth and was overwhelmed by the response. “Initially I was hoping to gather 1,000 pairs, but we quickly surpassed that goal and we wound up collecting over 3,000,” said Burns. “The Club Pilates members were so incredibly generous!” Lindsey and member of the February volunteer group carried the underpants to Kenya which were included in the kits. Since there were so many undies, team members from the University of New Hampshire who are traveling over in June will bring over the remaining pairs.
When distributing the Wings Poa kits, Kenya Connect’s staff provides menstrual health and hygiene information and answers questions from the girls. As a result of the program, girls are rarely missing school due to their periods.
