Decathlon, the French retail giant, allegedly breached its commitment to not conduct business as reported by research firm Disclose. The official statement on 29th March 2022, had conveyed “Decathlon’s solidarity with colleagues” in Ukraine and neighbouring nations, announcing the discontinuation of supplies to Russia and suspension of shops.
Internal documents and testimonies disclosed that Decathlon continued supplying goods to Russia through an indirect route. Despite its promise, the sportswear giant reportedly shipped products like ski jackets, trousers, and shoes from Bangladesh to Russia, involving a “shell company” in Dubai. The brand is known to have sold apparel worth US $ 12 million to the firm Desport.
Decathlon has not officially responded to Disclose’s allegations, but it assured the research agency of its commitment to prevent product resale in or to Russia. The context of this discovery is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, prompting widespread sanctions and leading several foreign companies, including Decathlon, to announce their exit from the Russian market.
