The Scream franchise was launched back into the spotlight following 2022’s Scream, and according to a recent projection, Scream VI is on pace to be the series’ most successful film at the box office.
According to a recent report from Deadline, the latest entry in the iconic horror franchise is tracking to earn $37 million at the domestic box office at launch. If this number holds, this would be the highest opening for a Scream movie in the franchise’s history, narrowly edging out Scream 3‘s premiere in 2000, which earned $34.7 million at its domestic debut.
The report goes on to mention that Jenna Ortega’s star power is likely a reason for the larger projection, but the previous success of 2022’s Scream is also a huge marker. That film opened to $30 million during its debut, which was a surprise considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic at the time. In total, Scream ended its run with earnings of $81.6 million domestically, and $140 million worldwide.
Scream VI will see the directors of the 2022 film Scream return, with Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett stepping back into the franchise after the success of the fifth film. The next installment will reportedly continue with “the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”
Franchise vets Courteney Cox and Hayden Panettiere will be reprising their respective roles as Gale Weathers and Kirby Reed. Joining them in the sixth movie are some returning cast members of 2022’s Scream, including Melissa Barrera (Vida), Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), Mason Gooding (Booksmart), and Jasmin Savoy Brown (The Leftovers). They will also be joined by franchise newcomers Dermot Mulroney, Henry Czerny, Jack Champion, Liana Liberato, Devyn Nekoda, Josh Segarra, Samara Weaving, and Tony Revolori.
