JACKSON COUNTY, MI — A new shop has opened in downtown Jackson, while another closed it’s Michigan Center storefront and the Jackson farmers market has settled into a winter location

A Michigan Center store closed its storefront, but it’s not going out of business

A Michigan Center business is closing its retail store but is reminding customers it’s not going out of business.

On Saturday, Nov. 25, Modern Farmhouse, 4552 Page Ave., announced on Facebook that after a lot of thought and discussion it is closing its retail store. Its last day was Sunday, Nov. 26, according to the social media post.

The family-owned home décor and furniture store is owned by Cal McFate and his family. It started out as a simple hobby before snowballing into a business.

Jackson’s Farmers Market has moved indoors for the winter season

A successful summer 2023 season has organizers of the Grand River Farmers Market looking to continue momentum through the winter.

The market, run by the Jackson Downtown Development Authority, estimates it saw around 400 visitors daily and ended the season with roughly 20 different vendors participating this summer. The market saw growth in vendors, items and even the number of live music performances, Manager Dodi Wheeler said.

After this summer boom, and seeing demand for fresh produce during the colder months, the Grand River Farmers Market now is offering a second season in the form of a Winter Market.

What’s that? A new place to get a piercing or tattoo is coming to Jackson

Emily Radke has been a tattoo artist for roughly nine years, and has worked at several tattoo shops across the country.

She eventually started her own tattoo shop, 21 Blooms Tattoo Studio, in a small 9-foot by 11-foot space inside of Airport Landing Plaza, 3200 Wildwood Ave.

It was a one-person show for a couple years before her neighbors at Legacy 517 decided to move to a more favorable location in the plaza.

New owners & new menu items: Changes are coming to Jackson’s Junk Yard Dog

Customers grabbing a bite to eat at the Junk Yard Dog in downtown Jackson have likely noticed some changes inside the restaurant.

Previous owners Mike and Amy Carrigan opened Junk Yard Dog in 2016, but have now passed the torch to Cliff and Andrea Risner, along with sons Noah and Chris, who plan to take the restaurant at 128 W. Michigan Ave. to the next level.

The Risner family took over the restaurant about a month ago. Andrea had worked several years in the medical industry, while Cliff previously worked as a Jackson County sheriff’s deputy. The two have owned a few businesses in the past, including Cliff’s real estate business Beiswanger And Risner Real Estate Group.

Make your own work, support an artist at Curiouser Clay in downtown Jackson

Creating ceramics has always been a hobby for Eli Zemper.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Zemper used it as an opportunity to change careers from being high school teacher to her business, Curiouser Clay.

After operating the business inside of her garage in Chelsea for almost two years, Zemper decided they wanted to try out an incubator space inside of the Jackson County Tower Building, 120 W. Michigan Ave. The shop opened in November and will allow Zemper to see how Jackson reacts to having a ceramic studio in town, she said.
