Changi Airport Group (CAG) has launched a new initiative that gives travellers the chance to offset the carbon emissions from their air travel, regardless of the airline they’re travelling with.

Titled Changi Carbon Offsets, the new programme draws upon an intuitive carbon calculator on the Changi Airport website (see https://carbonoffsets.changiairport.com), and available via the Changi App.

With this, passengers can calculate the carbon emissions from their forthcoming flights based on the origin, destination and class of travel.

Next, they are offered the option to offset the emissions from their journey using their credit card for payment.

“Changi Carbon Offsets offers our passengers the opportunity to offset carbon emissions from their flights, by supporting internationally verified projects which will benefit the environment,” said Audrey Lee, Group Senior Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Sustainability, CAG.

“As a demonstration of CAG’s commitment towards lower-emissions air travel, CAG will be purchasing carbon offsets for all business travel by CAG staff going forward.”

CAG has selected a number of carbon offset projects that passengers can choose from, that have a significant impact on the environment and communities.

This was carried out in partnership with Carbon Clicks, a New Zealand-based carbon offset company.

The selected projects will help to conserve and protect existing forests in Indonesia, plant forests in China, and provide wind power generation in India.

For the Rimba Raya Forest Conservation project in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, the purchase of carbon offsets will help to: prevent carbon-rich peatlands from being burned and converted
to oil palm plantations; protect the rich biodiversity of the area and the endangered orangutans; and improve the quality of life for local communities.

Funds for the Anhuang Afforestation initiative in Guizhou, China, will go toward the planting of 120 million native trees, and establishing and creating more than 28,000 jobs.

Offsets bought for the Wind Power Generation project in Koppal, India, will enable displacement of fossil-fuel power generation with wind power, and will give rise to new job opportunities benefiting local communities.

The launch of Changi Carbon Offsets is the latest initiative CAG is taking on its sustainability journey to help mitigate carbon emissions.

CAG also works closely with the airport community to improve the energy efficiency of the airport’s buildings and operations, enhance waste management and recycling, conserve water resources and ensure that airport facilities and functions adapt to the impact of climate change.
