Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney has bolstered its intellectual property practice by bringing on board 22 lawyers and two patent agents from RatnerPrestia, the firms announced.
By combining with the smaller IP-focused firm, Buchanan increased its IP practice group by 65%, the firm said in its Tuesday release. The RatnerPrestia team is set to join its new firm Jan. 1.
“The addition of this group is a major step in our growth strategy for the firm,” said Joseph Dougherty, Buchanan’s chairman and CEO in the firm’s statement. “It increases our resources to enhance client service and expand relationships.”
Buchanan ranks 125th on the 2023 AmLaw Top 200, with gross revenue of almost $300 million. The precise financial terms of the deal with RatnerPrestia weren’t disclosed.
The two firms together have filed nearly 3,000 patent applications in the last year, placing the combined group among the top 10 most prolific patent firms in the U.S., according the firms’ statements.
Clients of Buchanan’s IP section include Fortune 500 companies and large universities, and individual inventors. The group helps them manage their patent and trademark portfolios, and handles IP litigation in federal and state courts, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
“We knew that Buchanan was the right fit for us and our clients,” said Jonathan Spadt, former CEO and president of RatnerPrestia, who will serve as a co-chair of Buchanan’s IP section.
