Important information has emerged regarding the execution of Thanasis Kalogeropoulos, which took place last Monday morning in the coastal area of Germasogeia, in the presence of numerous unsuspecting citizens.
Late on Saturday afternoon, investigators from the Limassol District Office proceeded with the arrest of two suspects, aged 41 and 44. There appear to be strong indications that the 41-year-old suspect is the motorbike driver and the triggerman who fatally shot Kalogeropoulos.
In parallel, authorities are working to examine the role played by the 44-year-old, who is suspected to have hosted the 41-year-old at his mansion for two months. Together, they transported the motorcycle to the arson scene, and after the murder, the perpetrators returned to the 44-year-old’s residence.
The investigative team is attempting to trace the motorbike’s passenger and the second executor, along with any other involved individuals. New arrests have therefore not been ruled out. Moreover, the scope of the investigations will expand to include the Central Prisons.
Currently, the motive behind the execution remains unknown. According to the available information in the hands of the Limassol District investigators, it is also apparent that the planning, organization, and execution of the murder were carried out at the 44-year-old’s mansion.
A telling reference came from the lead investigator in the case, Kostas Michail, regarding the involvement of the 44-year-old. “There is an informant who verbally reported, for now, that the 44-year-old was aware of the criminal act’s planning and execution.”
The two men were arrested and appeared in court yesterday to face investigation into allegations related to murder conspiracy, premeditated murder, possession, transportation, and use of firearms (Category A and B), possession, transportation, and use of explosive materials, arson, and car theft.
They entered the courtroom wearing bulletproof vests and were accompanied by a strong security presence.
Outside the courthouse, friends of Kalogeropoulos confronted the suspects during the departure of the police transport vehicle, throwing various objects toward the vehicle, leading to moments of tension and disturbance.
Evidence located through surveillance networks
In a diligent and persistent manner, dozens of closed surveillance networks were studied, revealing key information in a case.
Initial examinations of the surveillance networks first pinpointed the source of the stolen vehicle used in the crime. Furthermore, investigations unveiled that in the month of October, five license plates from vehicles of the same model as the one employed by the perpetrators had been stolen.
A photograph depicting the two perpetrators, which was released to the public, played a key role, as citizens provided various leads related to the driver, who bore specific characteristics resembling the 41-year-old suspect.
The two perpetrators were captured on closed-circuit cameras half an hour after the murder, riding the motorcycle, which reached the Zygios roundabout and made a U-turn in a westerly direction. A few minutes later, another closed-circuit camera recorded the driver covering his face with black fabric.
Authorities suspect that the driver lost his cap. Another closed surveillance network captured the motorcycle with the two perpetrators entering the road leading to the 44-year-old’s mansion. Apart from the closed networks, investigators gathered testimonies from citizens who witnessed the two culprits moving on the motorcycle.
Suspect met Kalogeropoulos ten days before assasination
Additional information has arisen in court about the 44-year-old suspect’s mentioning to a police officer that he knew Thanasis Kalogeropoulos and had met him ten days before the murder.
He further asserted that they discussed business, specifically related to gambling. He also mentioned that two other individuals were present during the meeting.
In addition to the above, the 44-year-old asserted that between October 27th and 31st, he was absent from his residence with his spouse, staying at a different location.
Following his arrest, the 44-year-old did not provide a formal police statement, citing exhaustion, but denied any involvement.
As for the 41-year-old suspect, he refused to answer any questions posed by investigators.
Investigators are expected to examine any surveillance records retrieved from the 44-year-old’s mansion, which might shed light on the suspects’ movements and interactions with other individuals who visited the mansion.
Key evidence may also be found in the telecommunication data of the two suspects, as it can reveal their activities and communications with each other, as well as with other individuals.
