Now through Feb. 20, Wheatley Heights-based Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts is calling on young creators on Long Island or New York City, from kindergarten through 12th grade, to apply for its “Uniquely U” scholarship program.
The program awards six eight-week Usdan scholarships for the upcoming summer, and includes tuition and transportation, valued at $8,500 each. These recipients can then attend Usdan on a 75% scholarship in future summers.
The school with the most student submissions will be awarded the “School Scholarship” and will have the opportunity to choose an additional student to attend Usdan on a full scholarship.
“The Uniquely U scholarship search gives us an opportunity to discover children with immense creativity who may not be aware of Usdan or whose parents are looking for a lower camp tuition cost,” Lauren Brandt Schloss, Usdan’s executive director, said in a statement.
“If you have a young artist in your life who is passionate about expressing themselves through writing, dance, music, theater, or visual art, is searching for ‘their people,’ and would benefit from a summer immersed in nature, Usdan is the place for them. Encourage them to apply for this scholarship and show us what makes them uniquely them,” she added.
Programs in the arts encourage young people to work collaboratively, build communication skills and think creatively, which educators say are assets in the business world. In addition, these programs bring other rewards. Just ask Jesse Mccoy, a Uniquely U 2021 recipient
“Usdan was a truly magical experience,” Mccoy said in a statement. “At Usdan, I made the best friends and had the most fun ever. I spent the summer performing on the coolest stage, learning awesome choreography for a musical, swimming in the pools, doing archery, and learning about nature. All in all, it was the best summer of my life.”
Winner will be announced during the week of April 3.
